Urban farming in Beijing, China.
SiEUGreen
SiEUGreen (Sino-European Innovative Green and Smart Cities) project built on zero-waste and circular economy approaches and demonstrated how technological and societal innovation in urban agriculture can positively impact society and the economy. In this project which was implemented between 2018-2022, Europe and China shared technologies and experiences from social engagement that contributed to the future developments of urban agriculture and urban resilience on both regions.
SiEUGreen tested novel resource-efficient agricultural techniques, developed innovative approaches for social engagement and empowerment and investigated the economic, environmental and social benefits of agriculture in five European and Chinese urban and peri-urban areas. In Norway, the Campus Ås from the Norwegian University Life Science NMBU demonstrated how waste can turn into resources for growing food in a circular system. Community gardens in Aarhus, Denmark; offered great lessons on how urban agriculture can enhance social inclusion and two gardens also tested technologies for closing loops in cities involving food production. In Hatay, Antakya, a greenhouse was built to showcase aquaponic and hydroponic technologies to grow food, offering an alternative to current agriculture practices in the region while contributing to the social integration of refugees. In China, Sanyuan Farm, in Beijing and Futiancangjun residential development, in Changsha also tested new technologies relevant to the SiEUGreen goal to contribute to resilient cities through urban agriculture and circularity of resources.
Sino-European Innovative Green and Smart Cities project (SiEUGreen) received funding from the European Union under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program, grant agreement 774233 and from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
