Nordic Toolbox for a Just Green Transition

Why should the green transition be a just transition?

A systemic change is needed to transition to sustainable and climate-neutral economies and societies. This requires not only environmentally sound but also socially just policies. It is essential to engage with communities and groups who are most affected by the transition and to ensure that support is in place for those facing challenges. By doing so, the green transformation can become both just and inclusive.
Why is it important that the green transition is just? Let’s delve into some reasons

Achieving the transition to an environmentally sustainable and climate-safe future is a matter of justice in itself – but how it is done also matters.

1. Foster public support

Active involvement of communities and stakeholders – particularly those most affected – in an inclusive social dialogue can help to build support for ambitious climate policies.

2. Develop better policies

By making just transition discussions and decision-making inclusive, policymakers can tap into the expertise of a diverse range of stakeholders. Their sectoral- or region-specific knowledge can contribute to the development of more effective and coordinated green transition policies, delivering broader benefits.

3.  Achieve broader sustainability goals

The green transition is not just about reaching climate goals. It is a powerful tool for achieving broader social and sustainability commitments, like the 2030 Agenda or Our Vision 2030.  For example, by creating green jobs that are accessible for all, a just transition can contribute to SDG 8 “Decent work and economic growth” and SDG 11 “Reduced inequalities”. Working towards a just green transition also aligns with the vision of building “a socially sustainable Nordic Region,” as outlined by the Nordic Prime Ministers in Our Vision 2030.
