Young people across the North Atlantic region are expressing a desire to come together and build a stronger sense of community. At present, however, they lack a platform conducive to discussing challenges specific to their region. This challenge speaks directly to NORA’s strategy of mobilising the region’s youth through innovative, sustainable engagement initiatives. Against this backdrop, NORA, alongside Nordland Fylkeskommune, organised a Generation North Atlantic youth (aged 18–30) event in Bodø and Lofoten.
The event, which took place on 16–19 September 2024, was set up as a smaller-scale precursor to Generation Barents, an annual gathering that brings together the youth of the Barents region. Over the course of Generation North Atlantic’s programme, participants were granted a unique opportunity to discuss mutual challenges and solutions, strengthen their competencies, and create valuable cross-regional connections. Through workshops and business and museum visits, the attendees achieved a deeper understanding of both themselves and their common North Atlantic identity. Following the event, the participating youths went on to join the Generation Barents gathering.
Having a smaller group of participants made for a more intimate, inclusive atmosphere, where everyone could feel seen and heard. In addition to the educational and professional benefits, many attendees formed long-lasting friendships, with one describing his experience thus:

The trip was amazing, and I can’t believe how much I learned! Every day was filled with new experiences that opened my eyes to different cultures and perspectives. From exploring historical sites to trying local food, each moment was a chance to grow and understand the Nordic countries better. Meeting new people and hearing their stories made the journey even more meaningful. I feel inspired and grateful for the knowledge I gained, and not to mention all the new friendships!

During a workshop aboard the Bodø–Lofoten ferry, participants were asked to identify and analyse the region’s biggest challenges. Using the insights gained from this exercise, they presented mock NORA project proposals, which led to the winning team outlining a social media campaign (#SmallTownBigLife) showcasing the benefits of small town and village life.
Despite an already a packed programme, the participants requested further time for interactive activities and collaboration. More generally, there was a clear call for Generation North Atlantic to be repeated in future years.
NORA constantly works to support youth initiatives in the North Atlantic. In this regard, the feedback from Generation North Atlantic underlines just how important it is to find ways of bringing together the region’s young leaders. Partly driven by this, NORA is planning another youth initiative involving Varanger commune in Northern Norway. For the second consecutive year, the ICE Arctic Circular Economy Summit will highlight key topics such as the circular economy and innovation in the Arctic. Building on this fertile soil, NORA aims to create a framework offering further opportunities for the region’s youth.
More generally, NORA’s focus on wellbeing and development across the region is reflective of how we – in collaboration with the youth – can contribute to a brighter future for North Atlantic society.
